Using Creel Data to Evaluate Blue and Channel Catfish Aggregate Harvest Regulations for Texas Reservoirs

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s strategic management plan for catfishes (Ictaluridae) called the development of alternative harvest regulations Blue Catfish Ictalurus furcatus Channel I. punctatus. Angler these species in most reservoirs has been regulated using a 305-mm minimum length limit (MLL) 25-fish aggregate daily bag (DBL) since 1995. Using existing creel data collected 2003–2018 at 86 managed under this statewide regulation, we examined size structure composition, percent release legally harvestable-size fish, density (number biomass). Additionally, having long-term data, evaluated temporal change fish structure, estimated impact by theoretical reduction (THR) model. were predominant harvested (>75% harvest) 63% reservoirs. Harvest structures catfish differed, but difference smaller than 406 mm was negligible (52% 48%, respectively). Percent (?305 mm) low (median = 13%).
